Dr Sofia Manolesou
Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
Dr Sofia Manolesou is a distinguished psychiatrist, specialising in child and adolescent mental health. Throughout her career, she has been dedicated to improving the mental well-being of children, adolescents and their families, offering a wide range of psychiatric and psychotherapeutic interventions. Her focus is on delivering tailored, evidence-based treatments that respect the unique needs of each individual and family.
Having earned her medical degree at the University of Patras in Greece, she completed the specialist training in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Aeginition University Hospital in Athens. She further obtained a Master’s in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Athens, focusing on first-episode psychosis. In addition to her medical qualifications, Dr. Manolesou is an accomplished family and couples systemic therapist, with additional expertise in several therapeutic modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-focused therapy and specialist interventions for eating disorders.
Dr Manolesou has held eminent positions in both Greece and the UK, across a range of clinical settings including inpatient and outpatient services. She still collaborates as a consultant psychiatrist with the prestigious South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, renowned for its excellence in mental health care and research. She has previously worked in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and in the private sector (The Priory Hospital). Her specialist clinical experience includes the service for early intervention in psychosis in Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust and the national eating disorders and dialectical behavioural therapy services within the highly regarded Michael Rutter Centre in London. In Greece she has worked in the public, private and non-governmental sector in a variety of clinical settings. Throughout her career she has been involved in management and services development and innovation.
Dr Manolesou is a committed trainer and supervisor for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, trainee doctors, other mental health professionals and affiliated specialties. She has organised and delivered training and seminars in the UK,Greece,Cyprus,Slovenia and elsewhere. She is also an active researcher and contributor to conferences and publications in the field.
She has a strong interest and significant experience in services development, innovation and quality improvement projects. She has been involved in senior management positions in the NHS and in Greece and has collaborated with organisations such as Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Medecins Sans Frontières, UK public health departments, EPAPSY (The Association for Regional Development and Mental Health) and more. In 2018 she was selected in the P4 Health Specialist talent pool for UNICEF.
